What are Back Massagers and How They Work
An Overview

Tag:
Many people experience back pain and muscle aches. The simple acts of carrying our own weight and sitting all day, can wreck havoc on our backs. One way to remedy this is to use a back massager. A back massager is great for treating back pain and sore muscles. Today, there are many types of back massagers on the market. You can find portable, non-heated, heated, full size and hand-held massagers. Most are electric. However, there are also some back massagers that are more archaic, such as tapping balls or body sticks.

Back massagers are modeled to replicate the touch of a real masseuse. They can be used lightly to relax and revive tired muscles or they can be used more intensely to treat painful muscles. Different back massagers have different uses. Percussion back massagers are often used by physical therapists or chiropractors to treat patients. There are also many personal use back massagers.

A very popular type of back massager is the back massage cushion. They can be laid out on the floor, the bed, or even in the car. These types of back massagers tend to be light weight, portable and made to contour to the body. The most popular type of back massager is the Shiatsu. Back massager cushions can be placed on chairs and often times are heated to help relieve back tension or stiffness in the lower back area. Some people use these while they are watching tv, relaxing in their bedroom or while at the office.

How They Work?

Back massagers work by increasing circulation and relaxing tired, stiff muscles and work to target different parts of the back. Large massagers are even able to work the shoulders, upper and lower back and even the thighs.

Back pain is often caused due to the muscles being overworked. The back subsequently spasms, contracts and balls up in knots. Back massagers with heating features are especially good for these types of issues.

There is some debate on how well back massagers work, or even if they are effective. Many people swear by them and extol their benefits. They enjoy the relaxation and muscle tension relief that they bring. Other people believe that only a professional masseuse and massage therapy can do any real good. Whether or not a store bought back massager can provide the same quality of massage as a professional is irrelevant. If the back massager can provide some amount of comfort and muscle relief than they may be worth the investment.
They are pretty affordable, depending on what type and model of massager that you get. A hand held massager can be purchased for under $50, while a full body massager will cost you over $100.
